Thousands Flock to Canada’s Most Prestigious Concours d’Elegance
Kemble, ON – Last weekend the Cobble Beach Golf Resort Community hosted the Cobble Beach Concours d’Elegance, showcasing antique and classic vehicles from across North America for the crowds to see.
Over 7,500 attendees flocked to the shores of Georgian Bay for the 5th Edition of this international event. On Saturday, the crowds enjoyed a new addition to the weekend, Cars & Coffee at Cobble Beach presented by Segal Motorcar, where local cars were displayed on the driving range. Sunday’s main event, the Concours d'Elegance, hosted over 100 elegant and rarely seen automobiles on the 18th fairway for the crowds to marvel over. Many vehicles went home with awards and the 1946 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 Pininfarina Cabriolet Speciale took both the People’s Choice Award and Best of Show.
The winning Alfa Romeo is owned by Christopher Ohrstrom from The Plains, VA. The car was originally constructed under the patronage of Giuliana Tortoli Cuccioli of Milan, a perfume designer who paid close to 5 million period liras for it. In 1946, the Alfa Romeo was used in a defiant display in front of the Paris Auto Show at the Grand Palais, following a bar against Italy, which was not a member of the newly formed U.N. The car was meticulously restored to its original 1946 condition. Original colour samples were taken from every area and matched precisely.
This year also saw the addition of a new judging team, Hagerty’s Youth Judges. This group was comprised of local children who judged a variety of vehicles, learning about classic and vintage cars in the process. The group chose a yellow 1970 Plymouth Superbird owned by Scott and Kay Sinclair from Caledon, ON as their winner.
The Concours d’Elegance included three displays, featuring vehicles from their Honoured Collector, the Canadian Coasters, and four Antique and Classic Boats. Steve Plunkett, a long time special advisor and supporter of the event was honoured by showcasing six vehicles from his private collection. He also entered his 1941 Cadillac Custom Limousine Style 41-62190 titled "the Duchess", which took first place in its class. A group of Canadian Coasters added the event to their itinerary on their return trip from their tour from Victoria, BC to St. Johns, NL, and their cars were displayed on the show field alongside the competing vehicles. Due to the Concours d’Elegance proximity to the Great Lakes, the organizers chose to add a display of Antique and Classic Boats, which features wooden boats from around Ontario.
